Weekender-Neptune Beach 2/2013
The Weekender Day 2
After coming off a beautiful first day of the “Weekender” our clients were excited to get back on the water for day two. In Day 2 of the weekender we typically cover mainly rescues so we were happy the weather was going to be sunny and warm, well so we thought anyways! Our morning started off with an on land discussion about reading charts and learning some basic navigational skills. After about thirty minutes on land we were ready to hit the water. We started out with a nice warm up paddle across the St Augustine Inlet to Salt Run, where we would do the majority of our training. Arriving at the beach in Salt Run we noticed it started to cloud up a little bit, hey no big deal right? Our training started with a review of the “wet” exit which then transitioned into self rescues. Self rescues took up most of the remaining morning and we finished with demonstrating some assisted rescues. Lunch time=break time, NO WAY! During lunch we talked about different towing techniques and went over some more rescues. After lunch is when the weather took a turn. What started out to be sunny, warm, and calm wind day turned into a cloudy, cool, windy one. Assisted rescues continued for a little while and then we transitioned into towing. This was a welcome change as it gave everyone a chance to warm up! Towing continued back across the canal to a little island in the middle of the river. We took a brief break here and discussed all of the strokes that were learned the day before. Our paddle continued back to the boat ramp/launch point where we practiced our strokes and maneuvers along the way. As we arrived back to the ramp I demonstrated some rolling for our clients as they were very interested in that topic. Our day finished up about 30 minutes longer than advertised but we were all fine with that! The “weekender” is a great package for anyone looking to build their skills as we basically build the class around you!
Happy Paddling!
